Grease Resistant vs Plain Board: When the Coating Is Worth It

It depends on what you serve, not on your budget

The barrier coating adds a small amount per tray. Whether that is money well spent comes down entirely to one thing: what you put on the dog.

What happens to uncoated board

Paperboard is wood fibre. Oil travels along fibre by capillary action, so grease does not sit on top of an uncoated tray, it moves into it. The board darkens, softens and loses rigidity, and anything printed on that area goes muddy.

What a barrier actually does

A food-safe coating seals the surface so oil cannot enter the fibre. The board keeps its stiffness, the tray keeps its colour, and the print stays sharp for the whole time a customer is holding it.

Where plain board is genuinely fine

A plain dog in a bun, eaten within a few minutes, does not put enough oil on the tray to matter. If that is most of your volume, uncoated board is the right call and the saving is real.

The decision rule

Chilli, cheese, slaw, heavy sauces or anything sitting under a heat lamp: coat it. Plain dogs served fast: do not. Minimum order is 12 trays, production runs 2 weeks, and the mockup is free within 24 hours.
